Kael had an MRI on Thursday May 21. The neurologist felt where he had dysphagia (his feeding issues), delays in his motor development and a small head that there was good reason to at least check it out. He warned us taht 40% of kids with developmental delay never have an actual "reason" that can be found on MRI, etc. That sounded about right, having seen so much being in the special ed program with Drew and Evan. I felt motivated to have the MRI. Some of it was Mommy-Gut (or I guess we call it the Holy Ghost) and some of it was the neurologist's medical opinion that it most likely needed to be done. The rest was that we have already met our max out of pocket, so I was thinking "What the heck? Better safe than sorry, right?"
Kael had to be sedated for the MRI so hae would be still. He was already falling asleep by the time they had assessed him and started the IV (we had to get up at 6 AM to be there by 7 AM). Things went well. He woke up well. I called the next day to get the results. The doctor said there was nothing surgical, ie tumors. That was a relief. Then he said that word- "however". Kael has decreased brain volume, particularly white matter. The white matter is what directs traffic to the gray matter. He said this would explain why K is delayed in his motor skills. It would explain why his movements are discoordinate. He said this is not progressive. There is no way to know for sure how this will affect him or what abilities he will and will not have. We had just started Kael in early intervention. He said that was good and to continue with that. He said we would jsut have to watch K and see what he would be able to do. We go back to the neurologist the very end of August to follow-up. The weirdest part? This is just another random thing. He said this is usually caused by an "injury" in utero before 25 weeks- anything that cuts off blood flow to the placenta such as compression or knotting to the cord or infection. How one mom is so lucky to have a child with a spontaneous chromosomal deletion, a child with a pervasive developmental disorder and a child with a random brain injury, I will never know. For realsies- what are the freaking odds?
So, we continue to hang in there and just do the best we flipping can! LOL. We have appreciated all your prayers and we continue to appreciate all your thoughts and prayers. Thanks!
